Ep. 1 - How to get the most flavour from every coffee bag?

At Total Coffee, we're all about fresh is best and helping you get the most our of every bag of coffee. We're here to educate you on the when to drink your coffee after roast date and how to store your beans to keep them in their prime.

Coffee can actually be too fresh, so as a general rule, optimal brewing is from 7 days post roast. During these wintery months, you may need to give your beans an extra day or two to settle more. Then the coffee is best enjoyed up to 6 weeks.

The biggest impact on coffee freshness is once you open the bag. Once coffee is exposed to air, heat, light and moisture, the flavour of coffee begins to change rapidly. That's why freshly roasted specialty coffee tastes so much sweeter, richer and more vibrant. Many supermarket coffees have been sitting on shelves for months, so by the time they reach your cup, much of that flavour has already disappeared.

The easiest way to make better coffee at home? Start with good-quality, freshly roasted beans.

To keep your beans at their best:
• Buy whole beans and grind only what you need.
• Store them in an airtight container.
• Keep them in a cool, dry cupboard, away from direct sunlight. No fridge or freezer please!
• Buy smaller amounts more often so you're always brewing fresh coffee.

We love the Airscape coffee canisters because they remove excess air from around your beans, helping preserve their flavour and aroma for longer. Browse our Airscape range here
